Those of you who are familiar with my novels, the Conspiracy Series, know that I did a great deal of research and initially intended to write a nonfiction expose of what I had discovered. What my research uncovered with regard to education made me both sad and angry, because it is our kids and our future that are the victims.

My eyes were first opened when I taught a university course to mostly first-time freshmen who were graduates of the public school system. Frankly, I was stunned. These kids had been so cheated of anything resembling a good education, that I practically had to go back to square one to do basics before I could even begin to present anything at a level suitable for a university. These kids had never taken an art class, or been exposed to music appreciation. Their written work was something I would have expected from elementary school students. Some did not have cursive writing skills, but could only print. Their math skills were rudimentary. Even worse, they did not know how to think. They wanted to be told step by step what to do and were quite unable to come up with creative solutions when problems were presented. Some did not even know how to tell time–I swear this is true–and yet they held high school diplomas and had been accepted into a university. These were intelligent kids whose intellectual growth had been stunted by a seriously deficient education. That is what started me on my road to research, and what led me to ask: Is this an accident, or is something more going on here?

Research gave the me the answer, and it was not one I wanted to discover.  It ate at me for weeks, months, until I  had to write it down. I had to try and get the word out to all of you. In my novel, Conspiracy, one of the characters is part of a sinister shadow organization with plans for subverting the educational system for their own purposes. In his speech, he is talking to a group of educators who are part of the clandestine group. Here is an excerpt:

“As you know, the workplace is rapidly changing and will soon be a place where managers will need to keep control of a large number of workers. Most employees under this model need not be educated. It is far more important that they be reliable, steady and willing to follow directions. Very soon now more than seventy percent of the jobs in American will not require a college education. What are needed are workers who do what they are told, with a good attitude. We must now start teaching students from the earliest grades the attitudes and social behaviors that will please business. We need workers that are dependable and willing to follow instructions. We don’t need thinkers. The masses don’t need to be educated. They need to obey and to believe they are happy while obeying. The only way to keep a pool of such workers available is to be sure that most students don’t get educated. As long as the masses are poor and uneducated a small cadre of highly educated, creative people can control them. Our special (private) schools will train the brightest and most creative to be the managerial block.”

Do you find this unbelievable? Do you think this is not happening? Look around you. Because of the sharp division in the private and public education systems, we are rapidly becoming an unequal society, one in which one group is being groomed to lead while the other is being groomed to follow. It is subtle, but it is sinister, and it is happening right now, right under our noses. Our public education system is currently as fragile as a footprint in the sand–with one wave it can be washed away.

My intention in writing my novel, Conspiracy, and the Conspiracy Series was to let the public know what I had uncovered in my research. If you read  Conspiracy you will begin to see the big picture in all its disturbing reality. When you understand what is going on, then perhaps you can change it. Get involved in your children’s schools. Find out what’s happening. Demand a good education for your children. Their future depends on it.

This first class of nerve agents, the G-Series, was accidentally discovered in Germany on December 23, 1936 by a research team headed by Dr. Gerhard Schrader working for IG Farben. Since 1934, Schrader had been working in a laboratory in Leverkusen to develop new types of insecticides for IG Farben. While working toward his goal of improved insecticide, Schrader experimented with numerous fluorine-containing compounds, eventually leading to the preparation of tabun.

In experiments, tabun was extremely potent against insects: as little as 5 ppm of tabun killed all the leaf lice he used in his initial experiment. In January 1937, Schrader observed the effects of nerve agents on human beings first-hand when a drop of tabun spilled onto a lab bench. Within minutes he and his laboratory assistant began to experience miosis (constriction of the pupils of the eyes), dizziness and severe shortness of breath. It took them three weeks to recover fully.

In 1935, the Nazi government had passed a decree that required all inventions of possible military significance to be reported to the Ministry of War, so in May 1937 Schrader sent a sample of tabun to the chemical warfare section of the Army Weapons Office in Berlin-Spandau. Dr. Schrader was summoned to the Wehrmacht chemical lab in Berlin to give a demonstration, after which Schrader’s patent application and all related research were classified. Colonel Rüdiger, head of the chemical warfare section, ordered the construction of new laboratories for the further investigation of tabun and other organophosphate compounds and Schrader soon moved to a new laboratory at Wuppertal-Elberfeld in the Ruhr valley to continue his research in secret throughout World War II. The compound was initially code named Le-100 and later Trilon-83.

Sarin was discovered by Schrader and his team in 1938 and named after their initials: Schrader, Ambrose, Rudriger and van der Linde. It was code named T-144 or Trilon-46. It was found to be more than ten times as potent as tabun.  Cyclosarin was also discovered during WWII but the details were lost and it was ‘discovered’ again in 1949.

This brings us to insecticides which are used today. A number of insecticides, the phenothiazines, organophosphates such as dichlorvos, malathion and parathion, are nerve agents. The metabolism of insects is sufficiently different from mammals and these compounds have been sold to us as having little effect on humans and other mammals at proper doses; but there is considerable concern about the effects of long-term exposure to these chemicals by farm workers and animals alike.  At high enough doses, acute toxicity and death can occur through the same mechanism as other nerve agents. Organophosphate pesticide poisoning is a major cause of disability in many developing countries and is often the preferred method of suicide. Veterinary sources are now reporting an alarming number of deaths and life-theatening reactions in  animals who are given the spot-on treatments for flea/tick control. Fipronil is one of  the active ingredients in some of these products. Fipronl is a neurotoxin. In animals and humans, fipronil poisoning is characterized by vomiting, agitation, seizures, and possibly death.

In 1996, when fipronil was introduced into the U.S. it was considered a safer insecticide because it appeared to target insects rather than mammals and other vertebrates. It kills insects by disrupting the central nervous system by a mechanism that is not completely understood. New research now shows that exposure to low concentrations of fipronil is toxic to vertebrates including mammals and humans by causing neurons to be come so over-excited that they burn out and die. Fipronil has been shown to mutate  proteins and to kill human liver cells at a concentration of 0.1. Meanwhile, the government allows fipronil residue in foods at levels 220 to 34,000 times higher. Also, current research indicates that fipronil sulfone, a chemical left over after fipronil breaks down, is even more toxic than fipronil itself. It is also very persistent in the environment.

Spot-on flea /tick products are applied topically between the pet’s shoulder blades. Fipronil collects in oils from skin and hair follicles and migrates across the pet’s body. Typically 98-100% of any fleas or ticks die within 24-48 hours. This toxic action lasts for approximately 30 days. A recent study found that, one day after applying the product to an adult dog, petting it for just 5 minutes while wearing gloves resulted in exposure of 600 ppm. Typical owners handle their pets more than 5 minutes per day. Also, any surface the pet contacts will become contaminated, thereby increasing exposure. Dander will also remain toxic for a period. Children are at higher risk. Veterinarians and other pet care providers also have increased risk. And what about the pet who has no choice in the matter but to stand there and be doused with a toxic chemical? Natural flea control methods are far superior on all levels, particularly when you consider the big picture, and recognizing the big picture is what the Conspiracy Series is all about.

In other studies where the animal survived being exposed to the chemical, fipronil disrupted endocrine activity, caused impaired spinal cord development, caused developmental delays, reduced brain weight, reduced cognition, hearing impairment, hair loss, and thyroid cancer.

Fipronil is applied to rice fields as an insecticide. The runoff was found to be highly toxic to crayfish. Fipronil has been observed to accumulate in fish, where it transforms into the even more toxic fipronil sulfone. Fipronil is highly toxic to bees, and bees are a critical link in the ecosystem. Without bees, how will crops be pollinated?  Fipronil has been implicated in bees’ Colony Collapse Disorder.  Without bees,  there will be a serious threat to our food supply.

The EPA website has issued this warning: “EPA scientists estimate the amount of applied pesticide that can transfer from the animal to the child’s skin from hugging or otherwise contacting a treated animal. Based on these estimates, the EPA ensures that children are protected from exposure to pesticide treated pets.”

It has been reported that fipronil is 1 of 16 pesticides selected to be monitored in a study sponsored by industry and planned by the EPA. The study set out to pay families $970 to videotape their children after exposing them to pesticides and other dangerous chemicals for 2 years. Intentions about the study leaked out, and after more than a year of pressure the EPA said it would not ‘run’ the study. Although the EPA is no longer providing direct funding for the study, it is being undertaken as a ‘private’ study by the American Chemistry Council. Children will still be intentionally exposed. The study intends to use children from birth to age 3.

It’s a twisted world, friends, but I never realized just how twisted until I began writing the Conspiracy Series.

They arrived back at Martha’s house to the smell of baking bread and a simmering pot of pungent stew.
“Good. You’re just in time for dinner,” Martha said. “And you’ll be pleased to know these are my own home grown potatoes. Not the toxic ones from the supermarket.”
Martha took note of their confused expressions.
“Oh, I guess you don’t know about the X-3 potatoes–now available at your local supermarket,” she said mimicking a commercial. “Most of  my research has been on rice, but our division came up with a real winner. A new insect-resistant potato, currently being served at fast food restaurants across the nation. It makes big, beautiful fries. Only problem is that it’s toxic.
“Toxic how? With what?” Mike asked.
As Martha busied herself with setting out plates of food, she continued talking. “It contains Bt –the bacillus thuringiensis pesticide – Bt for short. I checked with the F.D.A. to find out exactly what had been done to insure the safety of this potato. I was mystified by the fact that the Bt toxin was not being treated as a food additive. As you might know, food additives are subject to labeling. The label on a bag of biotech potatoes in the supermarket will tell a consumer all about the nutrients it contains, yet there’s not a word about the fact that the potatoes are the product of genetic engineering or that they contain an insecticide.”
“Wait. I don’t  understand. Are you saying the X-3 has a built-in pesticide?”
“Exactly. They’ve been genetically engineered to contain the Bt pesticide. The really evil irony is that it’s the same natural insecticide that organic growers have used in certain circumstances for years.”
“So then what’s the problem?”
“When Bt is used externally on crops, as is the case with organic farmers, it’s killed by sunlight and any existing residue can be washed off the produce. With genetically modified Bt crops, the toxin-producing gene has been engineered into the plant’s DNA. The Bt never dies. Every cell of the plant will contain Bt so that an unsuspecting insect that eats any part of the plant will die.”
“And, of course, anyone who eats the potato is also eating a toxic pesticide,” Mike said shaking his head in disbelief.
“Bingo! Would you like toxic fries with that mad cow burger?” Martha added sarcastically.
“So how did Harmonia pull this off?” Mike asked.
“In 1999, researchers at Cornell University found that Monarch butterflies died unexpectedly from eating milkweed plants that had been dusted with the pollen of genetically engineered Bt corn. Even the damned pollen had become toxic! I got so ticked about Bt that I contacted the F.D.A. to see why it isn’t considered a food additive so it could be labeled right onto the food packets. At least that way people would have a choice whether or not to buy it. They told me that this new potato is classified as a pesticide, not a food. Because the Bt potato it technically a pesticide it’s exempt from F.D.A. regulation.”
“That’s outrageous!” Kama exploded. “How can they get away with that?”
“Corporate greed. Powerful lobbies. A public who doesn’t have a clue what’s being done to the food they eat. General apathy. Denial. Take your pick,”  Martha replied.
‘Hey, wait a minute. If they classified it as a pesticide then it comes under the regulations of the E.P.A. That’s definitely the Environmental Protection Agency’s domain,” Mike said.
“You’re right. But there’s another loophole there. I contacted the E.P.A. about the infamous X-3 Bt potato. It seems the E.P.A. works from the assumption that if the original potato is safe and the Bt protein added to it is safe, then the whole product is presumed to be safe. No additional testing is needed they say. Although, some geneticists believe this reasoning is flawed since the process of genetic engineering itself may cause subtle, as  yet unrecognized changes in a food. Not to mention that the  process turns the entire potato into a pesticide,” Martha said.
“Man, what a maze of deceit,” Kama said shaking his head in disbelief.
“Oh, it gets even better. The Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act specifically bars the F.D.A. from including any information about pesticides on its food labels.” Martha added.
“So it’s a real Catch 22,” Mike replied.
“Yeah. They have it all legally sewn up,” Martha said. “That’s why I only eat organic.”
